President Donald J. Trump has signed a new executive order that places artificial intelligence at the center of national policy, requiring federal agencies to purchase only those AI systems that meet strict standards of truth-seeking and ideological neutrality.
AI NEWS – Published on the official White House website, the order stresses that AI will increasingly shape how Americans learn, access information, and navigate daily life, but warns that when models are infused with political or social agendas, particularly diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), they can distort accuracy and undermine trust.
The President pointed to several cases in which AI models changed the race or gender of historical figures, refused to produce content celebrating certain groups, or enforced controversial norms such as prohibiting “misgendering” under all circumstances, framing these as clear examples of ideology replacing truth.
To prevent such outcomes, Trump’s order demands that government contracts include provisions ensuring AI systems prioritize historical accuracy, scientific objectivity, and openness about uncertainty, while remaining neutral and free from frameworks like DEI, critical race theory, or systemic bias unless specifically requested by users. Within 120 days the Office of Management and Budget will issue guidance to agencies, and vendors that fail to comply risk losing federal contracts, with decommissioning costs charged back to them.
The President emphasized that while private companies remain free to design models according to their own standards, the federal government has an obligation to procure only AI that is reliable and truthful, building on his earlier Executive Order 13960 from December 2020 on trustworthy AI. Supporters of the new directive see it as a bold step to safeguard public confidence in artificial intelligence, while critics argue it could stifle attempts to address fairness and representation in algorithms.
With this move, the Trump administration positions the United States at the forefront of a global debate over whether AI should reflect cultural values or remain a purely objective tool, and the decision is certain to ignite both technological and political controversy as the role of AI in American life continues to expand.
